With a 45-degree bearing edge, the drum head film has much less contact on the drum shell itself. This results in a more lively sound, packed full of sustain and attack. These bearing edges also produce considerably more harmonic overtones, creating a brighter sounding drum. These added overtones make fine-tuning even easier, due to the increased sensitivity to tension changes.
