Cranborne Audio Brick Lane 500 Modal PWM Compressor

The Cranborne Audio Brick Lane 500 is a 500 Series analogue compressor built around a proprietary Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) compression circuit — a fundamentally different approach to dynamics control that operates at a 250 kHz switching frequency and keeps the signal path 100% analogue throughout. Where traditional compressors use VCAs, optical cells, or FET transistors as their gain reduction elements, the Brick Lane 500’s PWM architecture delivers near-zero compression artefacts (THD below 0.00085% even at 20 dB of gain reduction), with attack times as fast as 6 nanoseconds and an extended frequency response of ±0.5 dB from 2 Hz to 80 kHz. The result is a compressor that can be as transparent or as characterful as any workflow demands — and is able to mimic the ballistics of multiple classic compressor topologies.

Six compression modes are the central concept: Velvet delivers Vari-Mu-style vintage warmth with tube-inspired harmonic behaviour; Float produces gentle, wavelike opto-style dynamics; Glue offers light bus-style cohesion; Tame provides ultra-fast, surgical transient control; Smash pushes into aggressive FET-style limiting with explosive punch; and Polish activates an analogue lookahead limiter using quarter-wave predictive voltage detection for true zero-latency mastering-grade brick-wall limiting. Each mode fundamentally rewires the compression ballistics — attack and release curves, ratio (from 2:1 to 20:1), and knee character all shift completely with the mode switch. The Stress control adds a dedicated harmonic saturation layer on top of compression, ranging from subtle tube warmth in Velvet to transient-crushing saturation in Smash, and acting as a loudness/clipping finaliser in Polish — all with up to 20% THD available on demand.

Practical features are equally considered: ±20 dB input and output/make-up trim controls, a 4-position sidechain HPF (Off, 60, 100, 200 Hz), 12-segment LED level and gain reduction meters, true bypass, and all controls on 41-way detented pots for precise recall. Two Brick Lane 500 units can be paired into a true stereo compressor via OptoSync — Cranborne’s wireless LED-to-optical communication system that synchronises all controls from master to slave with no cables required, with automatic circuit calibration ensuring matched saturation characteristics between units.
