  • Core Materials & Winding:
    • E string: Carbon/steel core, tin-plated, removable ball end.
    • A string: Synthetic core with aluminium winding.
    • D & G strings: Synthetic core with silver winding which helps with richness and projection

  • Gauge / Tension: Medium tension.

  • Sound Characteristics: Warm, focused tone; strong projection; nuanced overtones. Suitable for recitals, orchestral work, ensemble playing, and general practice.

  • Specialty: The tin-plated E string gives a mellower sound compared to platinum or gold-plated options.

Thomastik-Infeld PI100 vs PI101 — What’s Different

Feature PI100 PI101
E-String Plating Platinum-plated E-string. Gives a clearer, more focused sound. More resistant to corrosion, especially useful if you sweat more. Tin-plated E-string. Warmer, mellower sound. Less corrosion resistance than platinum when exposed to moisture.
Sound Character Brighter, more projected on the high E; more “soloistic” edge. Warmer, smoother on the E; more suited to ensemble playing where a softer brightness is okay.
Which Players Might Prefer It Players who want more brilliance especially in solo or edgy playing. People who want sharp clarity on high notes. Players who prefer warmth, softer tone, or those who play in groups/orchestras and want a less piercing E-string.
Durability for Moisture / Corrosion Better: platinum plating is more resistant to sweat and corrosion. Less resistant: tin plating wears more quickly under moisture, but many players prefer its tone despite this.

How to Choose Between Them

To help customers choose, you might use a short “at-a-glance” comparison note like:

Choose PI100 if you want a bright, clear E-string with more projection and resistance to corrosion.
Choose PI101 if you prefer a warmer, mellower sound and don’t mind a little more maintenance.
